Meet with a Film & Performing Arts Advisor!

The Department of Theatre and Film wants you to make the most of your time here, whether you plan to Major or Minor in one of our programs, or you just want to be involved in the department. Please look over the information below and make an appointment today!



Be sure to meet with a Theatre or Film Advisor at least once a year, ideally before you register for classes. Even if you have already met with someone from the Academic Advising Center, you should make an appointment with Film & Performing Arts faculty to discuss your academic plan. Departmental advisors have a better idea of what classes are offered when and which classes are prerequisites. THE SOONER YOU MEET WITH A DEPARTMENTAL ADVISOR, THE SOONER YOU WILL GRADUATE!

Familiarize yourself with the University-wide requirements, the BA degree requirements and the program degree requirements. Overwhelmed? Your advisor can help explain these things to you.

Check out Degreeworks in UAOnline ( under “Student Services.” You can take a tutorial, and later in your academic career, you will be able to check how close you are to completing your degree.

Why are you still meeting with a general university advisor!? Make sure you meet with a Film & Performing Arts faculty advisor at least once a year, preferably once a semester, to stay on track.

Make an appointment in advance. Don’t expect faculty to be available without an appointment.

Print your registration form BEFORE you come to your appointment. It is available on UA online. We also recommend using the Semester Schedule Planner available at the bottom of this page to layout your classes and other activities for the semester.

Keep track of your progress using UAOnline. Choose “Student Services”, then "Degree Works/Electronic Degree Audit" to view the requirements you’ve completed and those you still need to get to. Please remember that this is only an unofficial degree audit, and is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. Meeting with a qualified advisor OF YOUR MAJOR is the best way to stay on the fast track towards graduation!

We recommend you take a combination of major-required courses and university core requirements every semester. This will keep you interested in and excited about your education. It seems fun to take all of your theatre courses at once, but how will you feel with a semester of nothing but Math and Science? Mix it up and keep yourself motivated!

Know Before You Go:

  • Become familiar with the class schedule UAF Catalog
  • Collect copies of your registration materials, financial aid information, and transcripts from other universities you have attended. Go to to use DegreeWorks and develop a tentative educational plan and semester schedule
  • BRING THESE WITH YOU WHEN YOU MEET WITH YOUR ACADEMIC ADVISOR along with a pen or pencil and notepaper
  • Give some thought to your interests, academic/career goals, courses you might like to take, and whether you might qualify for non-traditional credit options
  • Prepare a list of questions for your academic advisor

Don't Waste Time!

  • MAKE AND KEEP APPOINTMENTS. Call if you need to cancel or change an appointment.
  • COME PREPARED. If you’re registering, bring a tentative class schedule, work schedule or planned activities.
  • ASK QUESTIONS. If you don’t understand a policy or procedure, just ask until you do.
  • BE OPEN-MINDED. Your academic advisor’s job is to present you with options so you can make better decisions.
  • ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY. Accept responsibility for your decisions.
  • KEEP CURRENT. Stay up-to-date on policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • KNOW THE ACADEMIC CALENDAR. Know deadlines and schedules to avoid last minute rushes.
  • KEEP PERSONAL RECORDS. Keep records of your progress. If you talk with different academic advisors, these will be helpful.
  • SEEK HELP. Seek help from your academic advisor when you need it.
  • DEVELOP A RELATIONSHIP. The better your academic advisor knows you, the more helpful she/he can be to you.

SUMMER? Faculty are off contract during the summer. Most still check email, but you may have to wait for a response. For immediate help, contact the Academic Advising Center, but check back with Film & Performing Arts faculty as soon as the semester starts!
