Resident tuition for all
Starting in fall 2027, we’ve unlocked Alaska by eliminating out-of-state tuition! At the University of Alaska Fairbanks you’ll automatically receive the in-state tuition rate, regardless of where you’re coming from.

Where you'll learn.
Wilderness surrounds Fairbanks, yet highways, airlines, fiber and satellites firmly connect it to the world. So you can attend and earn your degree online from anywhere.
In Fairbanks, you’ll find the Troth Yeddha’ Campus and the UAF Community and Technical College. Beyond, regional campuses serve Kotzebue, Bethel, Nome and Dillingham. Research sites can take you to Kodiak in the south, Juneau in the east and Toolik Lake above the Arctic Circle.

An update on fishhook chickadee beaks

Over 26 years ago, my friend Ned Rozell wrote about a startling new deformity seen in Alaska’s black-capped chickadees: “In 1991, a man living in King Salmon noticed three black-capped chickadees with beaks curved like fishhooks,” Rozell wrote. “Since then, hundreds of people from Southcentral Alaska have seen chickadees with overlong beaks that make it difficult for the birds to feed. The drastic increase in sightings has biologists worried that something is very wrong in Southcentral.”
Research finds past burns can limit Alaska wildfire spread

UAF-led research found that previously burned areas can act as natural barriers to wildfire spread by reducing available fuels. The effect can persist for decades, although hot, dry and windy conditions make fires more likely to cross into younger burn scars.
