Laboratories & other shared facilities

The station has a variety of laboratories available for use by researchers upon request. All lab requests will be assessed carefully by the Toolik team before the summer season, to make sure each project can be accommodated reasonably. There are 9 hardsided labs and 4+ weatherport (tent) labs.  All labs have access to power, heat and Internet; only the hardsided lab have running water. 

Each lab has a different layout and assortment of lab equipment. Most hardsided labs have office space, lab benches, access to water, fridges/freezers, a hood, and drying ovens.  While only located in certain labs, everyone can have access to DI water, Drying ovens, muffle furnace, -80 Freezer, and the autoclave. The tent labs are outfitted with lab benches.

Additionally, the Environmental Data Center (EDC) supports the common use equipment across camp - microscopes, scales, herbarium presses, drying ovens, etc. Each piece of equipment can be checked out for use.

Science Workshop:

The science workshop building hosts a large assortment of tools and hardware that can be used by everyone needing to fabricate or repair a piece of equipment. All tools should remain in the workshop, and training may be necessary for some of the power tools. 

The "SCUA" (Stuff that Can be Used Again):

The SCUA is a small connex trailer full of left over/unused lab ware, such as random bottles, vials, hoses, and clamps, etc.  Anyone is welcome to using what was left in there; it is a good place to check if you need a few extra of something for your research while at Toolik.

 Shipping/Receiving:

This is a large weatherport tent where all the shipping/receiving preparation happens. The tent hosts a large workshop as well, with many wood working tools that can be used by the residents following training. The tent also is equipped with a CO2 tank that is used to make dry ice for projects who might need small quantities on occasions.
