UAF Consolidated Fee

What is the UAF Consolidated fee?

The UAF Consolidated Fee is a fee charged to all students, both undergraduate and graduate, at a flat rate per credit hour. This fee supports a variety of student-focused services and resources across the university.

All students enrolled in courses are charged the consolidated fee, including those taking classes online. Many of the services supported by this fee are available both in person and remotely. For example, Health & Counseling Services provides both in-person and online support options, and resources such as Nanook Recreation, the UAF Library, and other student services provide benefits that support students throughout their academic experience.

Why do we have a consolidated fee?

The UAF Consolidated Fee was established beginning in Fall 2020 for the 2020–2021 academic year. Prior to its implementation, a student’s bill typically included at least ten separate fee line items that supported many of the departments now funded through the consolidated fee. These included fees such as the ASUAF Student Government Fee, the Nanook Recreation Fee, the Student Activities Fee, and others.

The previous fee model was complex. Some fees were assessed as flat amounts once students reached a certain credit threshold, while others were charged on a per-credit basis and capped at a maximum amount. Fee rates also varied depending on the campus offering the course. As a result, the total fee structure could be difficult for students to understand and anticipate.

To simplify this structure and align with other univeristy best practices, the Tuition and Fee Committee recommended transitioning to a single consolidated fee that distributes revenue to departments providing student services across all UAF campuses.

Benefits of the consolidated fee include:

  • Students can more easily estimate costs based on the number of enrolled credit hours.

  • The fee is applied beginning at one credit hour, providing a consistent and equitable structure.

  • Fees are easier to communicate to students, faculty, and staff.

  • Student bills are simplified and no longer include numerous separate fee line items.

How much is the UAF Consolidated Fee?

Today, the consolidated fee is a flat $56 per credit hour and supports student services across 16 departments at UAF.

The consolidated fee is mandatory and cannot be negotiated, waived or reduced.

Who decides the fee and distribution amounts?

The UAF Tuition Committee is responsible for conducting an annual review of the consolidated fee and its distribution to supported departments. These reviews are published on the committee’s Consolidated Fee Reviews webpage.

Decisions regarding changes to the fee amount or distribution percentages are made by UAF’s Core Cabinet. When potential changes are being considered, Core Cabinet may request that the Tuition Committee review and evaluate proposed adjustments.

Any approved changes to the consolidated fee or its distribution are finalized the spring before the academic year of implementation. This timeline ensures that updated fee information is available for inclusion in the UAF course catalog, allowing students time to review the changes and plan for the upcoming academic year.
