Nursing

Your education
The Bachelor of Science degree in nursing is offered by the University of Alaska Anchorage in cooperation with UAF Community & Technical College.
Both schools work together to administer the program locally in Fairbanks. The program consists of three semesters of pre-requisites followed by four semesters of nursing courses which begin in the fall semester of the academic year.
The academic program provides students with a closely related mix of theory and clinical practice. Classrooms and learning laboratories are furnished with equipment found in hospital and clinical settings to give students a realistic and hands-on experience.
The pre-nursing qualifications certificate, along with the BSN concentration, is a degree designed to guide students who want to apply to the University of Alaska Anchorage’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. The pre-nursing certificate (with the declared BSN concentration) includes the prerequisite and co-requisite courses required to apply to UAA’s BSN program, in addition to a clinical course. When applying to the UAA BSN program, students must complete a pre-admission nursing exam and are strongly encouraged to work in a clinical practice.
Pre-nursing students should work closely with an advisor while completing their requirements and preparing their application for the BSN program. While the certificate prepares students to be highly qualified candidates for the BSN program, it does not guarantee admission. The UAA nursing program is highly competitive. The Fairbanks cohort accepts 24 students each fall.
Graduates of the LPN certificate program are prepared to provide effective nursing services to individuals receiving care in inpatient settings and in structured outpatient settings. The academic program provides a closely related mix of theory, skills and clinical practice; students gain experience in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and community agencies. Graduates with this LPN degree are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN examination that grants professional licensure to practice nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
A limited number of students will be enrolled in the program each year. For information and to apply, contact UAF-LPNprogram@alaska.edu.
Effective January 30, 2024, the Licensed Practical Nurse program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks at the UAF Community and Technical College located in Fairbanks, Alaska earned initial accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. The next evaluation visit is scheduled for Fall 2029.
