Health Care Reimbursement

Your education
The online health care reimbursement certificate degree program is a one-year program designed to prepare you for employment as a medical biller and coder in medical offices, clinics, hospitals and other medical facilities. The program builds upon knowledge and skills developed through both the medical billing and medical coding occupational endorsements.
Program coursework will develop knowledge and skills in both medical coding and health care reimbursement, as well as medical terminology, medical office technology, and human diseases. You will also advance your medical office skills and knowledge through courses in administrative procedures, communications, applied mathematics, and professional skills in the workplace.
Upon completion of the Healthcare Reimbursement certificate, students are prepared to sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC)® certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders.
The occupational endorsement in medical coding is a focused program that will prepare you to perform medical coding tasks related to employment in medical offices, clinics, hospitals and other medical facilities.
Program coursework will develop knowledge and skills in medical coding, medical terminology, human diseases, and office computer applications. Coursework will teach you how to analyze medical records and assign codes for indexing and diagnosis.

Your career
Qualified medical billers and coders have become a valuable asset to the medical profession. Third party billing and compensation procedures are constantly changing and their application and comprehension has become a specialized field.
Graduates of the program may choose to pursue an administrative career in a variety of settings including: private medical and dental practices, group practices, clinics, corporations, hospitals, public health, rural settings, education, insurance companies, armed forces, and consulting companies.

Program delivery
Delivery:
Program can be completed either entirely online or through in-person classes or as a mix of online and in-class courses.
Scheduling:
Day, evening and weekend classes are scheduled to meet the needs of students who are attending full-time and those who are currently employed.

Program is located in downtown Fairbanks at the UAF Community & Technical College, 604 Barnette Street building. This location contains spacious classrooms, computer labs, tutors and learning center and comprehensive student services and support.

Program highlights
The successful completion of this certificate prepares the student for the national certification exam.
The program has been designed to enable students to transition from the occupational endorsement to the certificate and from the certificate to the A.A.S. medical assistant degree. The A.A.S. degree also establishes a gateway to more advanced degrees.
Class sizes are kept small to ensure students receive individualized one-on-one training from faculty and instructors who have years of experience in the allied health industry.

Other details
- Completion of WRTG F111X or ABUS F271 (earning a C- or better grade) is a requirement for this certificate degree.
- Students must complete and pass a CPR and first aid course specific to health care providers. Documentation of current card is required.
