Behavior and migration of Atlantic halibut

Project Description

Atlantic halibut was once a highly valued, commercially important fish species throughout the North Atlantic Ocean. Once abundant, the species was overharvested to the point of commercial extinction in many places. Fishery managers would like to rebuild sustainable local stocks of Atlantic halibut, but little baseline knowledge about the ecology and behavior of the animal exists, which may hinder the design of appropriate management plans. Using pop-up satellite tags, this project examines the behavior and migration of Atlantic halibut in the Gulf of Maine and in southern Norway.
