Biography

Willa Johnson grew up in Seattle and holds a BA in Biology from Whitman College. Her undergraduate research compared the diet of different size classes of juvenile sablefish. Willa has lived in Sitka, on Lingít Aaní since 2019. They spent several years working as a Fisheries Biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game commercial port sampling program. More recently they have worked as a communication specialist with the UAF Rural Alaska Students in One Health Research (RASOR) Program working with dual enrollment high school students from across Southeast Alaska.

Research Overview

Willa’s master’s research will examine concentrations of microplastics in wild-caught marine fish in Southeast Alaska. The goal of this research is to quantify potential translocation and biomagnification of microplastics across fish tissues and trophic levels.
