Jack McDermott

Jack’s research integrates fisheries, oceanography, climate science, and quantitative ecology to develop actionable science for conservation and management. His diverse fisheries experience includes work as a fisheries observer on longline and driftnet vessels, a groundfish sampler for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and a project coordinator for a salmon recovery organization in Seattle. At San Diego State University, Jack completed his master’s research characterizing temporal redistribution of highly migratory species (e.g., tunas, sharks, billfish) in response to expected ocean warming, identifying oceanographic drivers of albacore tuna migration phenology, and building data tools for marine sanctuary managers in the Northwest Atlantic. Strong partnerships among scientists, managers, and resource users are central to Jack’s work, ensuring co-developed research supports informed decision-making that balances human and ecological needs.
