After growing up in California, Brock earned his B.S. in Biology from Whitworth University in Spokane, WA. He then went on to work as a stream geomorphology technician for the US Forest Service in the Intermountain West and as an environmental educator for the Tri-State Steelheaders in Walla Walla, WA. From there, he went to work for the Fish Conservation Physiology Lab at UC Davis studying sturgeon and salmon ecophysiology before moving to Alaska to begin graduate school. He is widely interested in fish ecology, fish behavior and physiology, and the interactions of fishes with human-made structures.
My research focuses on the potential interactions of fishes in the Tanana River with hydrokinetic turbines. Specifically, I am looking at the spatiotemporal patterns of migrating juvenile fishes, species-specific encounter rates and collision risks with hydrokinetic turbines, and collision mitigation techniques. This work aims to better understand the potential risks of hydrokinetic turbine development and inform stakeholders of any potential trade-offs.
