Global conflict and its impacts on local heating and transportation fuel costs and recovering from catastrophic storms like ex-typhoon Halong will be some of the big topics at this year’s Alaska Rural Energy Conference, taking place Tuesday-Thursday, October 27-29 at the Westmark Hotel in Fairbanks.

The conference, hosted by the Alaska Municipal League and co-sponsored by the Alaska Center for Energy and Power, is a chance for energy stakeholders to share ideas and information to help promote economic development, environmental sustainability and energy security for Alaskans.

The conference is designed for people who plan, operate, maintain, finance, regulate and support rural energy systems. Whether you manage a utility, serve your community, develop energy projects, provide technical assistance or work in policy or research, you’ll find practical information you can take home and apply.

Sessions will explore the technical and economic feasibility of existing fossil fuel and alternative options for rural Alaska, discuss new technologies and recent success stories, and identify what the state and industry can do to help rural utilities function at the highest possible level.

The conference will feature two pre-event workshops on Monday Oct. 26. One is an interactive workshop on cybersecurity for remote Alaska microgrid communities led by researchers from ACEP, and the second is a tabletop exercise led by the National Laboratory of the Rockies.

Post conference workshops include:

  • Utility rate design and power cost equalization reporting
  • Biomass: How to make it work in the North
  • Community Microgrid Assistance Partnership
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs’ Division of Energy and Mineral Development grantee workshop
