Our Corner of Space: Flexspace, hoteling and unassigned spaces, oh my!

    February 16, 2024

Sometimes I feel like the land of space planning is a little like the Wizard of Oz. I came into the position in late 2021 when we all were working on what it meant to be "at work." Since then I've had the opportunity to work with many of you on what it means to organize around hybrid, remote, and in-person work. Along the way, I've witnessed bravery, compassion, ingenuity, and a desire to make space better for people. One of the areas I've seen creatively pivot their space to meet changing needs is the Center for Teaching and Learning. I was able to walk through their Bunnell space with Sean Holland, the media and innovation manager, and wanted to share about their journey down the blue and gold brick road.

Friday Focus: Appreciating the uniquely resilient

    February 16, 2024

The last few weeks were pretty awesome here in Fairbanks. It was seriously cold for a bit. A good friend of mine said around day 12 of the cold snap, "This is just stupid." It was, and then it was warm. It was amazing. It was Fairbanks. It was cold like it hadn't been for a long time. Pipes froze, cars didn't start and heating systems failed. It was really cold. If you are here in Alaska, you know what I mean. Early one Friday morning I walked into the Arctic Java coffee shop in the Wood Center. It was bustling. About a dozen students chatted while waiting to get a coffee; others waited at the end of the bar for their steaming cups to arrive. It was 42 below outside. Beyond the windows lay a wall of frozen, murky darkness. But inside it was warm and there was a wonderful positive vibe. We were a diverse group, sporting lots of comfort wear and practical clothing choices, but all shared one thing in common. We were all out and about on a 42-below morning!

    Friday Focus: Planning, pursuing, prospering

    February 09, 2024

Last week as I drove from my home to my office, to the grocery store, and back home through the thick ice fog in temperatures well below negative forty, I was reminded how blessed I was. So many people, organizations and systems were involved in ensuring that I had what I needed to live a safe and good life. Planning is key to running any organization. Members of resilient and prospering organizations recognize that there are multiple paths to reach a goal. For any reason, if the first plan fails or is not optimal, there is wisdom in being nimble, pivoting, re-planning and pursuing a modified plan. This is what we do at UAF.
