Students bring rural Alaska voices to Juneau

Ten UAF-Bristol Bay Campus students traveled to Juneau from Jan. 19-23 for an intensive, hands‑on look at the Alaska legislative process through RD F492: The Legislative Process, taught by Mike Davis, associate professor, emeritus and ABUS F183: Career Exploration - Amplify Your Voice, taught by Kathy Kysar, assistant professor of English.

Friday Focus: Why students go to Juneau

My friend Cutter's truck flew down University Avenue with the hood practically bowed from the mountain of pallets we'd stacked in the back. For three straight weekends, a rotating crew of students drove all over Fairbanks, scavenging wood for Starvation Gulch. When the weekend finally arrived, we built a towering polar bear bonfire, which we proudly titled the Flaming Nook. Once it was lit, the night felt effortless and electric. Standing there, though, watching the flames, I kept thinking about everything people couldn't see. Most of the crowd saw a finished bonfire and a good time. They didn't see the hours of hauling, organizing, and quiet coordination that made it possible. And in a strange way, that hidden work is a small reflection of ASUAF Student Government history.

The sun is starting to return in Alaska, and with the return of light comes a sense of excitement and renewal. This week and all month, I am excited to celebrate the life and legacy of Ḵaax̲gal.aat, or, as most know her, Elizabeth Peratrovich, a Tlingit civil rights activist and icon among Alaska Native peoples. She utilized her voice to advance Alaska's Anti-Discrimination Bill in 1943, finally passing in 1945, the first in the country, at a time when Alaska Natives were fighting for the right to be treated equitably in their traditional homelands.
