Applied Accounting

Your education
The 60-credit Applied Accounting A.A.S. program is a natural progression for students who have completed the Bookkeeping and Finance Occupational Endorsement and/or the Applied Accounting Certificate. All courses for this program can be completed online. This program prepares students for entry- and mid-level accounting positions in payables and/or receivables, bookkeeping and payroll accounting. This program also covers financial decision-making tools for the small-business operator.
Students entering the A.A.S. program are expected to have basic computer skills equivalent to CIOS F150.
The Applied Accounting Certificate program prepares students for entry-level accounting positions in payables and/or receivables, bookkeeping and payroll accounting. This program covers financial decision-making tools for small-business operators.
This certificate is offered fully online. This is an ideal pathway for students who have completed the Bookkeeping and Finance Occupational Endorsement. Students who earn the Applied Accounting Certificate have completed 30 credits of the 60-credit Applied Accounting A.A.S. degree.
Students entering the certificate program are expected to have basic computer skills equivalent to CIOS F150.
The Bookkeeping and Finance Occupational Endorsement is a focused program that can be completed completely online in as little as one semester. It provides students with education and training to qualify for bookkeeping positions in both small and large businesses, and teller positions in banks, credit unions and other financial institutions. This occupational endorsement fulfills requirements in the Applied Accounting Certificate and is a pathway to the Applied Accounting A.A.S. degree.
Students entering the occupational endorsement program are expected to have basic computer skills equivalent to CIOS F150.
The minor in Applied Accounting is designed to provide students the opportunity to acquire foundation-level knowledge and skills in payables and/or receivables, bookkeeping and payroll accounting. This minor provides students with education and training to qualify for bookkeeping positions in both small and large businesses or their own entrepreneurial venture. Courses include accounting principles, payroll accounting and accounting software systems.
This minor is a great choice for Bachelor of Arts degree-seeking students who need to satisfy their minor requirement or Associate of Arts students who want to explore accounting as an area of interest.

Your career
Each degree level offered through the applied accounting program will prepare you to begin a successful career in the accounting profession and will establish a gateway to more advanced degrees. Depending on degree level achieved, potential careers for graduates include entry to mid-level positions with strong upward mobility.
Graduates of the applied accounting program have gone on to own their own bookkeeping services, work in accounting positions at corporations, utility companies, government agencies, non-profits, and small businesses. Others have gone on to complete their B.A. in accounting and eventually obtain their CPA license.

Program can be completed entirely online.
Scheduling:
Classes are scheduled asynchronously online to meet the needs of students who may be outside of Fairbanks, full-time students, or those who are balancing work and family obligations.
When to Start:
Students can start their program in fall, spring or summer semester.
Location:
Program is located in downtown Fairbanks at the UAF Community & Technical College, 604 Barnette Street building. This location contains spacious classrooms, computer labs, tutors and learning center and comprehensive student services and support.

Program highlights
The applied accounting program gives you a strong foundation in financial record keeping and preparation of financial and tax statements including accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll accounting. Attaining proficiency in the use of accounting software like QuickBooks is a fundamental part of the program as well.
The program has been designed to enable students to transition seamlessly from the occupational endorsement to the certificate and from the certificate to the A.A.S. degree. The A.A.S. degree also establishes a gateway to more advanced degrees.
Classes are taught by full-time faculty, and numerous adjunct instructors from the local business community, bringing real-world business insight and experience to the classroom.

Other details
The applied accounting program is an open admission program requiring high school graduation or equivalent degree. Students entering the A.A.S. program are expected to have computer literacy skills that include saving/retrieving files, use of office applications, Internet and e-mail or obtain them through CIOS F150.
Options to pursue a bachelor degree are available within the University of Alaska. An option to study internationally as part of the associate degree is offered as well.
