  • Business Students from UAF Join Alaska Angel Investor Conference

    Over the course of the last 12 weeks Alaska Center ICE and the UAF College of Business and Security Management (CBSM) Student Investment Fund (SIF) sent three students to the 2023 Alaska Angel Conference (AAC). The Alaska Angel Conference is a 12-week process of identifying, filtering, selecting, and managing a group angel investment. An angel investor is a private investor focused on financing small business ventures in exchange for equity. This year’s Alaska Angel Conference took 21 of Alaska’s best start-ups and 17 angel investors through the nuanced process of angel investing.

    “We had a terrific time at the Open House: loads of interest (who can resist tasting three different birch syrups?), great networking opportunities with different West Ridge scientists, and just such a great feeling and event," said Jan Dawe, Director of OneTree Alaska (OTA). Eighty-nine booth visitors ranked their preferences amongst the three birch syrups, providing helpful citizen science input for OTA's Innovations in Birch Sap Processing project.

  • Alaska SBDC Opens Funding Opportunity for Alaska Inventors

    The TREND program will award up to $10,000 to winning innovation proposals. The Alaska Small Business Development Center’s (Alaska SBDC) Technology Research and Development Center of Alaska (TREND program), in partnership with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), will begin accepting applications for the 2023 Phase 0 grant program on June 1, 2023.

  • IDEAs Awards Deadline is June 2023

    The Innovative Disclosures and Entrepreneurial Activities (IDEAs) awards recognize entrepreneurial individuals who have developed innovative approaches to research, teaching, and service. The competition, started in 2015, is hosted by UAF's Center for Innovation, Commercialization, and Entrepreneurship (Center ICE). Any innovation developed by UAF or University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) faculty, staff, and students using university resources or as part of a class is eligible for the IDEAs awards.

    Makerspace Student Success Showcased

    Makerspace Students in the Engineering 101 lab class have been hard at work on their student-led projects this semester under the tutelage of Dr. Dustin Ray, mechanical engineering professor, and Tate Barhaug, Makerspace Manager and Teaching Assistant. The class takes place in the Makerspace with the intention of inspiring students to find creative and practical solutions to challenges. The student teams are first-year undergraduate students who are interested in problem solving, some of whom have declared a major in engineering.

    Sandia National Labs; the University of Alaska Fairbanks Center for Innovation, Commercialization, and Entrepreneurship (Center ICE); the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL); the Alaska Small Business Development Center (ASBDC); Fairbanks Economic Development Corporation (FEDC); and the Department of Energy (DOE) Boost Platform hosted a workshop in April focused on identifying regional technology challenges and opportunities.
