    PhD Student's Summer Project Results in New Ocean Acidification Sensor

    This innovation on a simple sensor will not only help researchers, but because of the proposed cost savings, it could create a much more accessible tool for more than just well-funded scientists. Josianne’s efforts could create more access for remote communities and educators as well. Josianne is currently in the process of licensing her work to an Alaskan company to bring it to not just Alaska, but communities all over the world.

    Open applications: Introducing graduate students fellowships

    Center ICE supports two types of fellowships, and we are looking for applicants to apply for each of them for the spring 2024 semester. For graduate students interested in innovation, Center ICE offers an Innovation Fellowship. This fellowship partners with academic departments to combine a 10-hour fellowship with a 10-hour TA-ship through the interested students' department so that students can explore the world of innovation and gain hands-on experience working on innovative projects.

    In Innovation for Alaska and the Arctic student teams will engage directly with complex, real-world problems from policy, economics, technology, national security and innovation. Students will test hypotheses using a start-up model approach, respond to the needs of the end-users, and focus on evolving the discoveries into implementable solutions.

    Under a RISE-UP Seed Fund award, researchers Natalie Monacci and Christina Buffington are partnering with Lingít Aaní, or Southeast Alaska, and Sheet’ká, the community of Sitka, on a project that may lead to monitoring and education products that could strengthen UAF enrollment.

    The EnergyTech University Prize (EnergyTech UP) from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Technology Transitions is back for its third year! Team registration is open now for students and faculty interested in this exciting skills-building competition. The prize, part of the American-Made program, challenges multidisciplinary student teams to identify high-potential energy technologies, assess their marketability and pitch their strategies for commercialization.
