UAF Writing Center

The Writing Center is a student-staffed tutoring service focused on building the writing skills of the UAF learning community. We offer one-hour tutorial sessions in 801 Gruening; we also offer sessions virtually. Using the calendar and form below, you can schedule a meeting with a Writing Center tutor in person, over the phone, on Google Hangouts or Zoom.

The Writing Center is open the following hours:

Monday – Thursday: 10 am – 4 pm; 7 pm – 10 pm
Friday: 10 am – 1 pm
Sunday: 1 pm – 6 pm

You can also telephone the Writing Center at (907) 474-5314 or visit us in the Center to schedule an appointment. You can also contact us via email at uaf-writing-center@alaska.edu

To make an appointment with a Writing Center tutor:

  1. Using the “Appointment Calendar” panel below, review the available time slots.

  2. In the “Schedule an Appointment” panel, click “Add” and select your preferred time. (Please do not book multiple back-to-back appointments.)

  3. Complete the required fields and press “Submit.”

  4. Either upload your draft in the appointment form or email it to us (uaf-writing-center@alaska.edu). Please send your draft at least 30 minutes prior to your appointment time. Finally, please limit your document to a maximum of 10-12 pages. If you have a longer draft that you would like assistance with (such as a thesis or dissertation), contact us via email so that we can discuss the best way to help you.

Our scheduling software is unable to send confirmation emails; if you need to change or cancel your appointment, or if you want to confirm your appointment time, please email us. At the time of your appointment, a tutor will contact you via the conferencing method you selected in your appointment form.

Our tutors include English Department teaching assistants and a few outstanding undergraduates. We collaborate with each student on a one-to-one basis, and we will work with students at any phase of the writing process—planning, drafting and revising. We can also help writers discover ways of improving grammar, mechanics, and punctuation. Our tutors can assist you in all phases of the writing process, including the following:

  • Brainstorming and generating topics
  • Organizing ideas
  • Developing research strategies
  • Use of citation styles—MLA, APA, and Chicago
  • Editing for clarity and correctness

In addition to tutoring, patrons are welcome to use our computer laboratory (19 PCs, 1 Mac) and our many resources—dictionaries, handbooks, style guides, and more. Patrons are also able to print up to 25 pages daily free of charge. Technicians and tutors are on hand to assist with computer-related questions.

The Writing Center features artwork from Eric Alain Parker (MFA, '15).
