Your education

The information technology specialist program is designed to prepare you to implement, support, and troubleshoot computer and information technology systems. Individual courses of interest and professional development are also available through this program.

Computers and information systems are relied upon by organizations of every size and industries as varied as business, health care, government and education. From supporting individual users working at their desk, to implementing and troubleshooting systems located in back offices, opportunities to work as an IT specialist are as diverse as the organizations that rely on computers and information systems.

Graduates are prepared to obtain entry-level employment in IT positions such as desktop support technician, help desk specialist, computer support specialist, network support specialist, network and information security specialist, and network and computer systems administrator.

Program delivery

Delivery:

Program is completed entirely online.

Scheduling:

All required courses are available online, providing the flexibility to accommodate students at a distance and those who are currently employed.

When to Start:

Students can start their program in fall, spring or summer semester.

Location:

Program is located in downtown Fairbanks at the UAF Community & Technical College, 604 Barnette Street building. This location contains spacious classrooms, computer labs, tutors and learning center and comprehensive student services and support.

Program highlights

Classes are taught by full-time faculty and adjunct instructors from the local IT community, bringing real-world insight and experience to the classroom. The instructors are experienced professionals who not only have excellent technical skills and knowledge, but they know how to communicate that knowledge to their students.

PREPARE FOR INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS: The IT specialist program also provides students the opportunity to prepare for the following industry certifications:

  • CompTIA-A+, Network+, Security+
  • Cisco Systems-CCENT, CCNA
  • Microsoft – MTA, MCSA

Students not interested in pursuing the degree program may enroll in these courses for personal or professional development, as well as to prepare for industry certifications.

Other details

Students entering either the certificate or A.A.S. degree program should meet with a program advisor to discuss program content requirements and develop an education plan that matches the goals and interests of the individual student.
