  • Member - Center for Arctic Security and Resilience
  • Instructor - UAF Homeland Security and Emergency Management Program
  • Research Associate, International Arctic Research Center, University of Alaska Fairbanks

Alec Bennett started with UAF in 2006, at the time working with the Department of Defense's supercomputing facility. More recently his efforts have focused on developing climate and hazard related computational models with the International Arctic Research Center (IARC). He has been a faculty member in the Homeland Security and Emergency Management program at UAF since 2019, and is the developer and lead instructor for the Climate Security graduate concentration in the Masters of Security and Disaster Management, and the new standalone Climate Security graduate certificate program. Courses taught include Models & Scenarios, Environmental Security, and Climate Catastrophes.

Alec is currently an active member of multiple long term funded research projects, including the study of Aquatic Ecosystem Vulnerability to Fire and Climate Change in Alaskan Boreal Forests, with the Department of Defense’s SERDP program, and the InteRFACE project, studying coastal near-shore environments in the Arctic with the Department of Energy. He is also working on continued research to improve the understanding of Arctic climate related extreme events, and their connection to policy, decision-making efforts, long-term planning, and the effects of long term climate shifts on local, national, and international security concerns. He is also a member of the UAF Security Initiative, and is part of an ongoing working group to improve the connections between the UAF research community and the defense community.
