First year students can join the Emerging Scholars Academy and become part of a learning community cohort.

ESA is a nine-day intensive summer bridge program and cohorted learning community that includes:
Summer bridge
- One credit math preparation course to ensure correct placement from ALEKS math placement exam
- Behind-the-scenes tours of campus and research facilities
- Assistance with financial aid, admissions and course registration issues
- Panel discussions with professors, current and past students, and administrators
- Exciting outdoor Alaska field trip with staff and faculty
Cohorted learning community
- One-credit College Success Skills course (fall)
- Three-credit General Education Requirement course (fall)
- Three- or four-credit General Education Requirement course (spring)
- Academic coaching sessions with SSS advisor
Each program track (STEM and Classic) is designed for 15 students who plan to attend at least one class in-person in the fall.
