Technical Details for the SEP 14 Upgrade

NTS will be deploying the latest version of Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP), 14 MP2, to all UAF and SW-owned Windows and macOS computers enrolled in System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) and JAMF (aka Casper Suite), respectively. If your workstation or laptop is joined to the domain, you should receive this software.

Windows Upgrade Process

This change is a major version upgrade and the automated update program will completely uninstall the previous version and install this new version.

The software will be available for installation through SCCM the morning of Monday, 18 September. It will install automatically if you do not initiate the installation yourself before 12:01 am Friday, 22 September.

Whether you choose to initiate the installation or it happens automatically, the following will occur:

  1. The installation package runs and stages the uninstaller, CleanWipe utility.
  2. Your computer will automatically restart to free up any files or services needed by the utility. There is no way to cancel or delay this restart.
  3. The CleanWipe utility runs when the computer boots back up.
  4. Your computer will automatically restart a  second time to finish running CleanWipe. There is no way to cancel or delay this restart.
  5. The virus and malware protection software, Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP), 14 MP2 installs.
  6. Your computer may request a third restart to finish the SEP 14 MP2 installation. You can delay this restart.

Due to how and when SCCM detects installed software, it will initially report that the deployment of SEP 14 MP2 failed. You can safely disregard this alert as it will automatically resolve itself the next time that SCCM runs inventory.

macOS Upgrade Process

The macOS deployment does not include the CleanWipe utility, so it will proceed as previous software deployments did. JAMF will install the software in the background then prompt you to restart the computer at your earliest convenience.
