Advanced preparation helps ensure that an average incident doesn't turn into a dangerous one. Wherever you are in Alaska, be sure to dress for the weather and keep emergency cold weather gear and supplies in your vehicle at all times.

As a residential campus it's imperative that every effort be made to keep the university open and operating. Weather-related closures or other emergency information will be initially disseminated via one or more of the following methods:

Facilities Services regularly maintains more than eight miles of walkways, and 164 exterior stairways or 1,700 steps.

The grounds crew does a great job in clearing walkways, parking lots and streets. In the event of heavy snowfall or ice buildup, please be patient as they get to your area. If your area has not been cleared in a reasonable time, or you need immediate clearing or sanding/salt, please call dispatch at 474-7000 to report your concern.

With a little planning, caution, and proper footwear, you can remain upright this winter.

  • A free pair of shoe cleats are available to UAF employees. For info visit www.uaf.edu/safety/.

  • Use caution on wet surfaces near building entrances, on steps and ramps and parking lots.

  • Walk on cleared/sanded walkways and be wary of fresh snow over ice.

  • Use existing walkways and handrails.

  • Slow down on snow and ice. Take short shuffling steps in icy areas.

  • Keep your hands out of your pockets so you can catch yourself in case you slip and fall.

  • Wear appropriate winter footwear with non-skid soles.
