Plan will help green up UAF

February 3, 2014

Cornerstone

"Greening" the University of Alaska Fairbanks should become more efficient and goal-oriented with the help of a plan now under development.

The UAF Office of Sustainability is working with the Review of Infrastructure, Sustainability and Energy Board to develop a Sustainability Master Plan. The Brendle Group, a consulting firm, is helping.

The plan should be done by September.

The plan seeks a holistic approach to improve UAF’s sustainability ratings, compile greenhouse gas emissions, and examine current strategies. It will also develop a vision and goals and establish a framework for continuous improvement.

An advisory committee representing a cross-section of campus will develop plan components, review drafts and approve a final plan.

UAF already performs well on measures of sustainability. It has implemented several successful initiatives, including more than 40 student proposals covering everything from solar panel installations to the Community Garden to the Sustainable Village student housing. UAF has a gold rating in the nationally recognized Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (https://stars.aashe.org/)  created by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.
