It’s once again the time of year when Fairbanks fundraisers turn red, and the American Heart Association (AHA) kicks off their annual Heartwalk fundraising event. Almost everyone knows someone effected by heart disease, and as the no. 1 killer of all Americans, cardiovascular disease research is a cause worth fighting for. The AHA’s annual Heartwalk is becoming a priority fundraising event for UAF.

Not only is every dollar that’s donated important to the cause around the country,  many of those dollars make it back home. To date, a total of $808,600 has come back to UAF to fund American Heart Research Projects. But this year fundraising can be a fun activity in itself that can help improve your health as well.

The Department of Recreation, Adventure and Wellness wants to help UAF faculty and staff in their fundraising efforts by offering two new incentives for walkers and team leaders:

  • Every walker that raises $250 or more will be eligible for a 20% discount on an individual or family membership to the Student Recreation Center.  Applies to semester and annual full memberships (not applicable to “LIFE membership” or with “WIN” discount).

  • Every walker that raises $500 or more will be automatically entered in a drawing for a free semester family membership. Entries will close on May 19 – day of the Heartwalk.

Participants wishing to use the 20% just need to visit the SRC website at www.uaf.edu/src/ and send their name and Heartwalk team name through the email link on the SRC homepage.

Discount verification will occur daily with an eligibility list kept at the front desk of the SRC. An email will be sent back to each participant with their discount eligibility confirmation. These incentives are exclusive to UAF staff and faculty so don’t hesitate to take part!

Also on deck for the Heartwalk this year is the UAF Heartwalk Dodgeball Tournament. The event kicks off May 5 at the Patty Center with the first game starting at 12:00 p.m. This double elimination tournament is still taking teams, up to a maximum of 20 teams. The entry fee is $100, and if the team is from UAF, a matching $100 will be placed on the signing team’s donation page.

The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams will receive $750, $450, and $250 respectively donated to their team’s Heartwalk page – a great way to ramp up your team’s fundraising efforts and have fun doing it! Winning T-shirts will also be given out to the top teams. There will also be MVP, Best Team Name and Best Uniform awards.

Spectators are encouraged to come and watch the competition as many of the teams dress up for the event. A $2 donation is asked to watch the games, but participants are sure to get their money’s worth. This year the UAF Fire and Police department will both have teams, so join up with UAF’s best and get your dodgeball on! All funds received directly benefit the American Heart Association.

For more information along with the registration form can be found again at the SRC website www.uaf.edu/src/.
