CFOS Seminar: Population genomics of marine invertebrates

February 2, 2021

Alice Bailey

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will hold its weekly seminar on Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. via Zoom. The talk will be offered by Laura Timm, a postdoctoral fellow with appointments at CFOS and the Alaska Fisheries Science Center.

"Population Genomics of (Mostly Marine) Invertebrates: Leveraging Interdisciplinary Approaches to Better Understand the Impacts of Human Activities on Non-Model Species"

The health and resilience of a species or ecosystem is hard to calculate, but we can use proxies to estimate these important characteristics. Insights gained from genetics help us understand how well a system will cope with disturbances, both natural and human-mediated. Timm will present research that uses genetic information to understand the resiliency of shrimp and squid in the Gulf of Mexico following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010; the importance of the pink shrimp's early life stages to fishery stability around the Florida Peninsula; and a likely mechanism of parasite re-emergence in the tropical disease schistosomiasis.
