CFOS Seminar: Fish intake and Alaska Native health research

October 13, 2020

Alice Bailey

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will hold its seventh weekly seminar Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. via Zoom. The talk will be offered by Diane O’Brien , a professor at the Institute of Arctic Biology.

"Incorporating the Traditional Diet into Alaska Native Health Research Using a Biomarker of Fish Intake"

The nitrogen isotope ratio is naturally high in fish and marine mammals relative to other traditional and store-bought foods. This talk will describe research that evaluates the nitrogen isotope ratio as a biomarker for the traditional diet in Yup'ik people in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and then uses it to detect associations with health and disease risk.
