Academic Leadership Institute now accepting applications

April 21, 2011

University Relations

The Academic Leadership Institute provides an opportunity for a small group of faculty, staff and/or administrators to explore the topic of leadership in an academic context. Since its inception in 2000 – 2001 more than 100 individuals have taken part in the institute, resulting in enhanced leadership at UAF.

The format of the institute is a morning gathering (9 a.m. – noon) one Saturday each month during the academic year. The time is divided between an invited speaker, questions and answers, and a case study.  A continental breakfast is served at each session. There is homework in the form of required reading for each session. Each of the twelve or so “students” will receive the set of books courtesy of the provost.  The 2011 – 2012 schedule is currently being developed.

Last year's schedule, available online, includes the reading list and will give you an idea of the timeline.

Who should consider attending?
•    Relatively new administrators
•    Faculty or staff who are considering administration as a potential career direction
•    Faculty or staff who are simply interested in the topic of leadership in an academic setting
•    Participants do not have to be located in Fairbanks, our intent is to include some rural participants by audio

How to Apply
Respond by email to Sheri Layral at fynlc@uaf.edu in the Northern Leadership Center by 5 p.m. Friday, May 20, with statements addressing the following three topics:

1)   Why you want to be included;
2)   Agreeing to do the required reading; and
3)   Agreeing to do your best to attend (in person or by audio) each scheduled session.

The institute typically receives about 40 applications for the 12 openings so the quality of your responses can make a difference.  Sheri Layral will notify you of your acceptance and give you instructions on where and when to pick up your texts.
