Academic Leadership Institute

UAF’s Academic Leadership Institute, founded by Provost Emeritus Paul Reichardt in 2000-01, is designed as an opportunity for a small group of faculty, staff and/or administrators to explore the topic of leadership in an academic context.   Since its inception more than one hundred individuals have taken part in the Institute resulting in enhanced leadership at UAF.

The format of the Institute is a morning gathering (9am to noon) one Saturday each month during the academic year with the time divided between an invited speaker, questions and answers, and a case study. There will be homework in the form of required reading. Each of the ten or so “students” will receive the set of books courtesy of the Provost. The schedule of speakers, texts and case studies for the current year are available here:

Who Should Consider Attending?

  • Relatively new administrators
  • Faculty or staff who are considering administration as a potential career direction
  • Faculty or staff who are simply interested in the topic of leadership in an academic setting
  • Participants do not have to be located in Fairbanks, our intent is to include some rural participants by audio

Academic Leadership Institute "Book Club"

After assessing interest in a continued Academic Leadership Institute "Book club," we have determined that there is enough interest to pursue a reading group. The program would allow us to meet once per semester during the evening, in which we discuss one pre-selected book. The following book was selected for this year's "Book club" based upon interest expressed in survey responses:

  •  Fall 2011 - Beyond 2020: Envisioning the Future of Universities in America
(American Council on Education Series on Higher Education) by Mary Landon
    Darden
  • Spring 2012 – Yet to be determined

For Fall 2011 “Book club” meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 9th from 6:30-8:30pm. The location is yet to be determined based on number of people interested in participating. A volunteer leads the discussion session, and is responsible for preparing for the meeting and facilitating the questions/integration of the material. A copy of the book can be checked out from the Northern Leadership Center.
