Grace Nelson

  • Name: Grace Nelson
  • Hometown: Lititz, Pennsylvania
  • Future study or career plans: I plan on starting a career in education and outreach for a conservation organization or agency.
  • Tell us about a recent project you worked on: I recently completed a five-part informational video series on chronic wasting disease for one of my classes.
  • What is the best selling point about majoring in natural resources that you would like others to know? The natural resource degree at UAF gives students a great foundation to start their careers. The all-encompassing degree introduces students to policy, research, and planning while allowing them to apply their knowledge in real-world applications.
  • Who or what inspired your interest in natural resources? I grew up in a very outdoor-centered family, so my interest was always there. However, I decided to pursue an NRM degree after attending the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School and realizing I could turn my passion for the outdoors into a career.
  • What has been your best experience with natural resources? The 290 field course was my favorite experience with natural resources at UAF. It was amazing to go visit professionals managing Alaskan resources and learn about their management practices and philosophies.
  • If you had a million-dollar grant, what kind of research project would you pursue? If I had a million-dollar grant I would create a K-12 curriculum to raise awareness for conservation issues and introduce youth to basic natural resource topics.
  • What is your favorite thing about UAF? My favorite thing about UAF is the opportunities it presents its students; from undergraduate research projects to weekly guest lectures.
  • Do you have advice for anyone interested in a natural resources major? Jump in! Try different things out. There are some really unique job opportunities in natural resources and UAF is the perfect place to explore those options.
