The Delta Junction district serves an area centered on the junction of the Alaska Highway and the Richardson Highway in Interior Alaska. This area includes the communities of Delta Junction, Big Delta, Delta Clearwater, Fort Greely and Dry Creek. Approximately 5,100 people live in the area, about a quarter of whom are transient workers in the U.S. armed forces or seasonal workers.

Delta is one of Alaska’s agricultural centers, with oats, barley and hay as the major crops. Outreach includes programs in agriculture and horticulture; integrated pest management; and health, home and family development.

Learn more about these iconic insects from integrated pest management technician and entomologist Alex Wenninger. Her free presentation will cover the habits and identification of common species of native lady beetles (aka ladybugs) found in Alaska, and how to attract lady beetles by building lady beetle habitat into your yard and garden. We'll also talk about why you shouldn't buy lady beetles at the store to release in your backyard.

Wayne Heimer, retired ADGF sheep research and management biologist, who served for many years on the board of the Wild Sheep Foundation and Alaska FNAWS, will lead a presentation on Dall sheep in Interior Alaska.

This is a UAF Cooperative Extension Service and Partners for Progress in Delta co-hosted event.

Learn more about the history and current condition of the Dall sheep population in Interior Alaska, and more locally, the Delta Controlled Use Area, and why they matter to the Delta Junction farm and ag community. Whether you’re a farmer, rancher, hunter or just interested in Alaska's wildlife, sound information about Dall sheep is often as elusive as the animal itself.

Learn some sheep secrets from Heimer, who was personally involved in the establishment of the original “Delta Management Area” (DMA), now called the Delta Controlled Use Area (DCUA) and the Tok Management Area (TMA). Wayne has remained committed to the success of the Dall sheep in Alaska and has a wealth of information to share.

Tanana District 4-H market livestock members will host a 4-H Market Tasting event June 6 at the Tanana Valley State Fairgrounds in the 4-H Building upstairs (former Totem Building). Hours are 1-3 p.m. Everyone is invited to learn about the 4-H auction, meet youth with market projects, enjoy free samples, and learn how to buy locally grown meat to stock in your freezer or business. Admission is free.

Youth will sponsor tables and provide a food item inspired by the animal they are raising, emphasizing the farm-to-table aspect. Potential market livestock buyers will learn tips on the various animals they could purchase at the fair market livestock auction and get ideas on how the animal can be used in various dishes.

The tasting event will also help youth who still need contacts for their record books and to qualify to market, give youth a chance to attract potential new buyers, and build a pool of community members who attend and support youth.

4-H members interested in having a table must RVSP to Jennifer Willeford at jwilleford7@gmail.com or 907-347-5498. Please include your name, phone, email and animal projects.

For more information, contact Willeford or Matthew Anderson, Tanana District 4-H program coordinator, at mranderson@alaska.edu or 907-474-2427.

4-H is for everyone! For information on joining the Alaska 4-H program, contact Matthew Anderson, Tanana District 4-H program coordinator, at 907-474-2427 or mranderson@alaska.edu.
