Women's Studies Scholarship in Women's Studies breaks new ground while destroying old stereotypes. The coursework encourages students to question their definitions of masculinity and femininity and to examine culturally generated gender-dependent expectations. By inviting both women and men to evaluate the influence of gender on their own lives, courses in Women's Studies reveal the significance of gender in everyone's lives. The Women's Studies curriculum discusses alternative world views, perspectives that are not frequently available to students.

The UAF Women's Studies Program incorporates diverse subjects, including anthropology, biology, linguistics, journalism, literature, history, psychology, sociology and political science. Women's Studies courses in each discipline focus on gender definition, perpetuation of stereotypes, and gender representation in the context of race, ethnicity, class and age. Each Women's Studies course is based on material by or about women from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds. Students examine the experiences of both women and men and consider the social, psychological, cultural and biological influences on their lives. The UAF Women's Studies Program offers a minimum of 14 regularly scheduled courses toward a minor, as well as special topics offerings by regular and visiting faculty.
