TV & Radio (Broadcast)
Learning by doing. If the broadcast track at the University of Alaska Fairbanks
Journalism program had to be described in a sound bite, that would be it.
In our classes we do more than talk about electronic news; we gather, produce
and package it. Then we watch it air on local newscasts. We do more than
study how others do things; we produce packages and newscasts. And all of
that prepares you to hit the ground running when you land that first job.
New
Media
What is New Media? No one is quite sure - and that's
the point. Electronic journalism is an exhilarating work in progress,
and at UAF, we'll teach you the skills essential to playing a
role in building that future. You'll begin with the basics of
reporting and writing since good journalism always starts with
solid content. But you'll quickly move on to Web site and media
design, then learn how to weave every imaginable medium together
interactively. You'll learn to edit and design type. If you're
so inclined, you'll sample our offerings in audio and video production.
Photojournalism
Telling the stories of our lives with pictures.
If a picture really is worth a thousand words, then the UAF photojournalism
majors are making encyclopedias as they chase and capture the
decisive moments of our campus and of Fairbanks and the surrounding
area. You'll get an opportunity to follow sled dog races, photograph
the aurora borealis, document the Chatanika Outhouse Races and
look into the basic human goings-on of our campus and community.
And because of our close ties to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner,
almost every photojournalism major has the opportunity to work
on America's farthest-north daily newspaper before graduation.
Print Media (News Editorial)
Our print curriculum builds a solid foundation
for tomorrow's Pulitzer Prize aspirants. At UAF, you'll get a
taste of every aspect of this exciting profession, from covering
elections to launching your own investigation. And we'll take
you as far as you want to go. Run up against a brick wall getting
documents from a government agency? We'll walk you through the
battle of the Freedom of Information Act. Write a great story
in class? We'll help you find a newspaper or magazine to publish
it.
