School of Education Laptop Requirement

In order to better prepare pre-service teachers for the professional communities they will enter, the School of Education supports and encourages teaching and learning with laptop computers.

All declared education majors and students who have begun taking 200-level education classes are strongly encouraged to own or have full time access to a laptop computer that meets SOE requirements for hardware and software.

All candidates for elementary and secondary licensure are required to own or to have full time access to a laptop computer as delineated below:

  1. Elementary baccalaureate students are required to own or have full time access to a laptop for ED 410, 429, and 486 and for the internship year.
  2. Elementary post-baccalaureate students are required to own or have full time access to a laptop before they begin their summer courses.
  3. All secondary post-baccalaureate licensure candidates are required to own or have full time access to a laptop computer by the beginning of their fall semester internships.

The School of Education strongly recommends Apple Macintosh laptops for a variety of reasons. All laptops must meet SOE standards for hardware and software. A complete discussion of these standards may be found on this page.

Candidates enrolled in School of Education courses at any level (with the exception of 500 level professional development courses) are eligible to purchase an Apple laptop computer bundle with all required software through the School of Education at a discount over regular educational discounts. We strongly encourage you to consider this option. This page addresses common questions regarding which computer may be right for you.

If you have questions about how a laptop purchase will fit in with your current financial aid package, please contact Tamara Hornbuckle (fntmh@uaf.edu; 474-6628) or Deanna Dieringer (fndld@uaf.edu; 474-7256) in the UAF Financial Aid Office.
