Elluminate Information

Many School of Education instructors use Elluminate Live for distance courses. Elluminate is a web-based application that let's instructors and students communicate and collaborate by sharing computer screens and audio in real time across the Internet. Elluminate works effectively even on slow dial-up Internet connections, but faster connections are recommended.

Your instructor will tell you if Elluminate is a part of your class. If you are participating in a class in which Elluminate is used, you MUST do several things before you can participate:

UAF Accounts and Passwords

You must have a current UAF e-mail account that you check regularly, either directly or by having it forwarded to an account that you check regularly. You must also have a working account on Blackboard.

  1. UAF Mail
    • If you have never activated (logged in to) your UAF account, follow these directions.
    • If your password has expired, go to Usermin, click the Login button, and select Change Password. There are explicit directions for changing your password on this page.
    • If you need to forward your UAF e-mail to another account, sign in to Usermin, click the Mail button, and choose Mail Forwarding and Replies. There are explicit directions for forwarding your mail on this page.
    • If you still cannot access your UAF e-mail, contact the OIT Help Desk at (907) 450-8300 or (800) 478-8226 and speak to a support technician. Be prepared to provide your UAF student ID number for verification.
  2. Blackboard
    • If you have never used Blackboard, go to the UAF Blackboard site and login.
      • Click the Login button
      • Enter your UAF userID (e.g., fsxxx)
      • For your password, enter your UAF student ID number followed by a capital letter "U"
    • If you have used Blackboard before, your password will be whatever you last used.
    • If you cannot remember your password, click the Login button and then click the Reset my Password link. The directions will walk you through the steps to get a new password.

Computer Software and Upgrades

Make sure your computer's software is up to date and that your computer can run Elluminate.

  1. On a Mac, run Software Update under the blue Apple Menu and install the lastest versions of Mac OS and Java. After you have run Software Update, run it again to see if any additional updates need to be installed.
  2. For Windows:
  3. Make sure your computer is capable of running Elluminate. Go to the UAF Center for Distance Education Elluminate Qualification Site and follow the "Before Your First Class: Elluminate Qualification" link to qualify your computer. Also check the links under "Resources: Getting Started" for more information about setting up your computer for Elluminate.
  4. Other Software: Your Elluminate class may require that you have specific software installed on your computer--e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Inspiration. Check with your instructor to make sure that you have the required software.
  5. Preparing Whiteboards: Go to Elluminate's Support site and select Presentation Wizard at the bottow right of the window. Follow on-screen instructions.
