UAF School of Education Secondary Program
The
Secondary Post-Baccalaureate Licensure Program is an intensive, classroom-based
secondary licensure program that prepares post-baccalaureate candidates
for secondary (grades 7-12) teaching positions. The program is offered
at both the undergraduate program level or at the graduate level program
with an M.Ed. Secondary Education degree option. The program is specifically
designed to prepare candidates to teach in multicultural settings in Alaska.
Content that addresses multicultural issues in general, and Alaska rural
issues in particular, is contained specifically in EDSC 457/657, Multicultural
Education and School-Community Relations, and is a fundamental component
of the coursework within the program. When funding is available, all secondary
Fairbanks’ candidates participate in a rural practicum. The program
is accredited by NCATE standards until 2010.
Upon request and satisfactory completion of this program, candidates are recommended to the State of Alaska for an Initial teaching license which is valid for three years and is "non renewable". During the three years of Initial Certification, a teacher is expected to meet requirements to move to Professional Certification.
A Professional Certificate requires the completion of the UAF Secondary Licensure Program (an approved program), submission of transcripts showing completion of an approved Alaska studies course and an approved Alaska multicultural course. The UAF Secondary Program EDSC 457/657 program requirement meets the Alaska multi cultural requirement. This program does not contain an approved Alaska studies course. In addition, candidates for a Professional Certificate must complete six semester hours of credit and submit a copy of the Examinee Score Report(s) showing passing scores on each required content area exam. Certificates issued after September 1, 2006 and later will be required to submit two performance reviews.
Candidates who apply as graduate applicants may simultaneously pursue teacher licensure and the M.Ed. Secondary Education degree. Significant additional coursework will be required (see M.Ed. requirements).
Candidates who enter the Secondary Post-Baccalaureate Licensure program are required to have laptops before they begin their internships in the fall semester of their professional year. Click here for more information on the SOE technology requirement.
