Post-Baccalaureate (License Only)

The Elementary Licensure Program is a post baccalaureate, year-long elementary licensure program for students who have previously completed a BA or BS degree.  The criteria used to shape this program are those that respond to national and state standards for quality teachers, students, and schools—as well as those that recognize, respect and build upon the unique cultural, linguistic and geographic factors that are specific to the Alaska context. This classroom-based program is built upon a close working partnership between interns, mentor teachers and university faculty.

The program requires one year of university coursework and an internship in an Alaska school. Program delivery is offered in Fairbanks or outside Fairbanks in UAF service areas. Students have the option to apply their graduate program credits to the requirements necessary for an M.Ed. in Elementary Education.

The beliefs, practices, and assessments are consistent with the licensure and accreditation requirements of the accreditation unit selected by the Alaska Board of Education (i.e., the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education/NCATE), the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, INTASC/Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium, and the Alaska Quality Schools Initiative which includes the Alaska Teacher Standards, Alaska Student Content and Performance Standards, and the Alaska Standards for Culturally Responsive Schools.

The School of Education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), 2010 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036; phone (202) 466-7496. This accreditation covers initial teacher education programs and advanced educator preparation programs. NCATE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit programs for the preparation of teacher and other professional school personnel. The School of Education hosted the NCATE Board of Examiners (BOE) visit in September 2004. The next scheduled BOE visit is in September 2009.
