Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)

SDS wall signSafety Data Sheets (formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets or MSDSs) are a valuable source of information on the hazardous properties of chemicals.   The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard [29 CFR 1910.1200(g)] requires:

Chemical manufacturers and importers shall obtain or develop a safety data sheet for each hazardous chemical they produce or import. Employers shall have a safety data sheet in the workplace for each hazardous chemical which they use.”

All SDSs must follow, at a minimum, the same 16 section format as outlined in the UN Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), Revision 3, issued in the Federal Register, March 26, 2012.   This rule became effective May 25, 2012.

SDS for products used at UAF may be accessed through our SDS Management Vendor, MSDS Online. There are two ways to access MSDS Online:

  1. Through the EHS Assistant Program and your chemical inventory
  2. Or go here and log on to the program using your UAF username and password.
