Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP)

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires a Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) be developed for all laboratories that use hazardous chemicals (29 CFR 1910.1450). While these regulations pertain specifically to employees, the CHP may also apply to students and visitors, depending on their activities.

EHSRM developed a CHP template that outlines the requirements for describing the safe use of potentially hazardous substances in UAF laboratories. The department Chemical Hygiene or Safety Officer should work with lab personnel to adapt the template to the specific procedures  performed in the lab. It is the Principal Investigator’s responsibility to ensure that the CHP is readily available, current, AND read and adhered to by all lab users.
