This summer, the University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Liberal Arts is launching a new opportunity for students to step beyond the classroom and into the field. The CLA StoryWorks Field Intensive is a week-long, hands-on experience designed to give students the chance to document real research as it unfolds in one of Alaska’s most dynamic environments.

From June 7-13, a small cohort of four students will begin with a one-day workshop in Fairbanks before traveling to Tok, Alaska, where they will work alongside an active anthropology field school. There, students will learn how to document field-based research through photography, video, writing and digital media, capturing both the process and the people behind the work.

Unlike a traditional classroom setting, this experience places students directly in a working research environment. Days are spent in the field, observing excavation work, collaborating with peers and producing content on tight deadlines.

Students will learn how to navigate real-world conditions. This includes working outdoors, adapting to a fast-paced environment and documenting research with accuracy, care and intention.

No prior experience is required.

Instead, the program is designed for students who are curious, motivated and eager to learn, whether they come from anthropology, journalism, art, film or any other discipline within the College of Liberal Arts and beyond.

With only four students selected, the program emphasizes mentorship, hands-on training and individualized support. Participants will develop practical skills in storytelling and research documentation while producing portfolio-ready work grounded in real-world experience.

All program costs are covered. Students may also receive $1,000 in compensation upon successful completion of program deliverables, recognizing their time, effort and contributions.

At its core, the CLA StoryWorks Field Intensive is about connection, between disciplines, between students and faculty, and between research and the broader community.

By documenting field-based research, students help translate academic work into accessible stories, expanding how knowledge is shared and understood.

Faculty and staff across UAF are encouraged to share this opportunity with students who may benefit from a hands-on, immersive experience. Students from all majors are welcome to apply.
