Katherine "Kate" Janoski is UAF’s new emergency manager. Janoski, an alumna of UAF’s homeland security and emergency management program, previously worked as the emergency program coordinator the Fairbanks North Star Borough Department of Emergency Operations.

Originally from Sandwich, Massachusetts, Janoski joined the U.S. Air Force in 1992, trained to be a medic and was stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. She also served two tours in Germany and nine years at Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina, and deployed with the Army and completed a short tour during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Janoski retired as a master sergeant after serving at Eielson Air Force Base and later began attending UAF year-round full-time. She is finishing a master of arts degree in environmental policy with the Arctic and Northern studies program.

Janoski has two young adult children, who decided to move somewhere significantly warmer, and two dogs. She likes to read, travel and run in half-marathons across the Lower 48. Always up for learning something new, she kept herself busy during COVID, trying her hand at soap-making, candle-making, painting and attempting to teach herself to play the dulcimer.
