Zoom security changes on July 31

July 28, 2020

University Relations

Zoom has announced that it will enforce stronger security settings for users. On Sept. 27, 2020, Zoom will require that all meetings have either a passcode or waiting room enabled. To prepare for this change, the University of Alaska will enable meeting passcodes by default starting Friday, July 31, 2020.

All newly created meetings will include passcode details in the scheduling process and provide the URL with the passcode embedded in it. This will help make the September change seamless, as any meeting configured with a waiting room or password will be unchanged. Please note that any meetings scheduled before July 31 will not be set up with a passcode. The best way to protect those meetings is to reschedule them and include the passcode feature or enable a waiting room.

If you do not want to use a passcode, you must enable a waiting room on your meeting, setting it to allow “Users not in your account will go in the waiting room,” which will allow UA members to join immediately and guests to be presented with the waiting room.
