During the holiday break, the Alaska 4-H program will host free health and nutrition activities for elementary school-aged youths in Fairbanks and North Pole.

First- to six-graders may participate in nutrition, cooking and fitness activities led by teens who have been trained as teachers through the 4-H Healthy Habits Champs program. Sessions will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 28 in Room 108 of the University Park Building, 1000 University Ave., and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 4 at the North Pole Worship Center at 3340 Badger Road.

Fairbanks 4-H agent Candi Dierenfield said the hands-on, interactive program will  teach children about the importance of healthy eating, active play and the environment in their daily lives. The younger kids respond well to teen teachers, she said.

“Teens make wonderful role models for younger children while learning valuable teaching skills,” she said.

Registration is required at https://bit.ly/2C8OeO6. The program is sponsored by the National 4-H Council, the Walmart Foundation and Young Smiles Family Dentistry, which will provide lessons on dental hygiene.
