Participants in passive solar heat workshops June 18 and June 19 in Fairbanks will build solar backpack ovens and learn about using solar energy for cooking, hot water and heating.

Design engineer Jim Scott and Art Nash, the energy specialist for the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will teach both workshops, which are free and cover the same information. The workshops will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days at the Tanana District Extension office, at 2427 27th Ave., on the south side of the Fairbanks Community Food Bank building. Scott will also teach a solar hot water heating workshop from 5:30 to 8 p.m. June 19 at the district office.

Each passive solar workshop will be limited to 12 participants. Contact Carmen Kloepfer at 474-5854 or cckloepfer@alaska.edu to register or for more information.
