Week's events: tree science, dental health, landscapes, steel drums

University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning is hosting more than 40 free lectures, concerts and other events this summer. Here is what’s happening during the week ahead:

• On Monday, Aug. 1, the Magical Mondays hands-on learning series will present Jan Dawe, UAF research assistant professor of natural resource education and outreach, discussing “What can you do with a birch tree?” The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium and atrium.

• On Tuesday, Aug. 2, the Healthy Living lecture series features periodontist Dr. Jeffrey Rogers on “Replacement options for missing teeth.” The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.

• On Wednesday, Aug. 3, the Discover Alaska series will present Richard Murphy, Snedden chair at the UAF Journalism Department, discussing “Northern landscapes.” The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.

• On Thursday, Aug. 4, the Music in the Garden concert series will host Cold Steel Drums. Styles include calypso, reggae, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and rock ’n’ roll played on Trinidadian steel pans made from oil barrels. Music begins at 7 p.m. at the Georgeson Botanical Garden.
