In the following link https://www.ktva.com/story/37418374/uaf-has-big-plans-for-its-hockey-program Champagne appears to be saying that hockey has its beginning in the slave community and that the current goaltending style originated in the "colored hockey league" This appears to suggest that 1. our vice chancellor of athletics is, at best, not very knowledgeable regarding one of the most important sports for UAF, or 2. that he has an agenda as to which athletes will be scouted in the future and they will be scouted less based upon their skill level than the color of their skin. I am offended that he can be allowed to force what appears as a discriminatory behavior. The following link http://www.birthplaceofhockey.com/origin/overview/ can be reviewed for historical facts. Mr Champagne appears to be repeating "facts" gleaned from a book that can be found at http://originalpeople.org/colored-hockey-league/%20 http://www.blackicebook.com/blackice/index.cfm?fuseaction=book.welcome. note: This link does not appear to work but has been left per the author's original submission. This book is historically flawed as is the information parroted by Champagne. Black individuals have amazing leaders and have done absolutely amazing things. But, to misassign them the achievements or origin of achievements of others is appalling. To mislead in this way Champagne has done a disservice not only to the true origins but to the African American heritage as well. Additionally by his statements he has called in to question the merits of future athletes that are scouted as to the agenda of why they have been scouted.
