Veterans Day has long been an occasion for reflection on the contributions and achievements of the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. We join the nation, as we do every November 11, in honoring all the servicemen and women, both veterans and those on active duty, who are part of the University of Alaska Fairbanks community.

Following the 10th anniversary of 9/11, UAF is joining more than 175 colleges and universities nationwide in honoring those casualties of the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The names of more than 6,300 service members and government officials will be read today outside Constitution Hall from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Each campus participating will observe a simultaneous nationwide minute of silence at 10 a.m. Alaska Standard Time. I ask that you please join us. Additionally, at approximately 5 p.m., there will be a 21-gun salute in front of Signers Hall.

Volunteers are still needed for the event. If you could spare some time to memorialize those who have died in service to our country or to donate baked goods for the readers, please stop by the Veterans Service Center in 113 Eielson.

Thank you again to those of you within the UAF community who are veterans or active duty military. Though we take special time today to recognize your service, what you have done and continue to do for our country is something that we are grateful for the entire year.
