University Fire Department extinguishes fire at power plant

A fire on Monday morning damaged the ash handling facility at the Atkinson Building,
which houses the UAF heat and power plant.
Facilities Services is not anticipating any interruptions in heat or power service
to the campus community as a result of the fire.
The University Fire Department responded to the fire shortly after 9 a.m. Flames and
smoke were visible when they arrived on scene. More than 30 personnel, including crews
from the Fort Wainwright Fire Department and Fairbanks Fire Department, worked to
extinguish the fire, which did not affect the new combined heat and power plant.
The fire department is still investigating the cause of the fire and the Facilities
Services team is assessing the extent of damage.
