University of Alaska debuts new online repository

A new online database created at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Rasmuson Library allows public access to the research works of UA students and faculty and staff members.
The database, ScholarWorks@UA, includes master’s theses and doctoral dissertations, both of which were previously available only in paper form, as well as historical papers and photos from the University of Alaska. The new database allows employees and students from any UA campus to publish their research, journal article or other work online. All the material is available to users of the database for downloading.
The website is a collaborative effort of all of the universities in the UA system, led by staff at the UAF Elmer E. Rasmuson Library. Users can browse by campus, or search by a variety of categories, including author, title and type of document. Materials are currently being digitized and placed in the database.
“The repository makes the many works that are created by UA faculty, staff and students every year much more widely available," said Bella Karr Gerlich, UAF dean of libraries. "Online access of these materials and University of Alaska historical material provides an important resource to the research community and the public.”
Employees and students interested in contributing to the database should contact their campus library. Institutional repositories are becoming prevalent in the academic community, and many other institutions of higher learning around the world have them, including the University of Oregon Scholars’ Bank and Duke University DukeSpace.
