The United Way of the Tanana Valley has begun its annual fundraising campaign, and I am happy to be part UAF’s long tradition of joining them in this important work. The United Way supports 20 nonprofit agencies in the Interior dedicated to improving the quality of life for everyone. It takes all of us working together to build strong and vibrant communities.

One easy and delicious way to support the United Way is to attend the annual chili cook-off today from noon-2 p.m. in Wood Center. It’s just $5 for five samples, $10 to taste them all, and you get to vote for your favorite. This checks all the boxes: Eat lunch, visit with friends and colleagues, and help your community, all at the same time!

I’d like to thank this year’s UAF co-chairs, Marcia Cassino and Brianne Dryver, both in the Division of Student Affairs. I hope you will join us in donating to the United Way this year. You can direct your United Way donation to any 501(c)(3) organization, including UAF. All employees can use payroll deduction to make contributions through the UAF United Way webpage.

Last year 101 members of Nanook Nation donated. This year our goal is 120 participants and $40,000. If you donate by Dec. 3, you will be entered to win one of several prizes, including Alaska Airlines tickets and an annual parking permit. Prizes will be announced at the Chancellor’s Holiday Gathering on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

We are strongest when we stand together. Thank you for everything you do to support this great university.
