University Relations

The UAF youth climbing program is open for fall 2017 registration! This semester we are offering three programs:

Recreation Climbing Club
This after-school climbing session aims to teach basic rock climbing skills and technique through top-rope climbing and bouldering indoors. We also encourage communication, teamwork, problem solving, trust and confidence through climbing with a small group of climbers. We want to grow a lifelong appreciation of climbing in our participants.

  • Tuesdays, 4:30-6:30 p.m. (Sept. 12-Dec. 5)

  • $200/semester (13 sessions)

  • Space limited to 10 students

  • Ages 8-18

Homeschool climbing club

This midday session is a great overall introduction to the fundamentals of rock climbing. Topics will include awareness of surroundings, communication skills, climbing equipment, knots, rope handling, rappelling and various climbing techniques.

  • Mondays and Wednesdays, noon-2 p.m. (Sept. 6-Dec. 6)

  • $350/semester (25 sessions)

  • Space limited to 10 students

Fairbanks Flash Team

The Fairbanks Flash-Competitive Youth Climbing Team gives climbers the chance to compete with other youth climbing teams in our region: Alaska/Washington, Division 1. Practices are specifically aimed at teaching climbers the skills and technique they need to compete at USA Climbing-sanctioned competitions. During practice, our coach works with each athlete to prevent injury, maximize climbing time, pinpoint strengths and weaknesses, motivate, inspire, and promote a healthy team environment.

  • Mondays and Wednesdays, 4-6 p.m. (Sept. 11-Dec. 6)

  • $375/semester (24 sessions)

  • Space limited to 10 students
